Chalk River Regional Nuclear Emergency Preparedness

Having Atomic Energy of Canada Chalk River Nuclear Research Laboratories as a neighbour has been a huge asset to our community. AECL has been a wonderful community partner and helps maintain the growth and stability of our area. Having a nuclear reactor in your back yard does come with some risk however.

The Chalk River Regional Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Committee is working hard to ensure we know how to respond to an emergency at the Chalk River Labs. Made up of representatives from municipal government, AECL employees, Emergency Management Ontario, Ontario Provincial Police, Red Cross and County services such as Ambulance, Social Services and School Boards Reps, the committee has tried to cover all the bases in planning for an emergency.

Finding Out About The Emergency

You will be notified about a nuclear emergency:
• when you receive an automated phone call, or
• by loud hailers on emergency vehicles.

Stay Calm. Go indoors. Tune into one of the following local radio or television stations:

Radio - CHVR 96.7 (Star) FM
CJMJ 100.3 (Majic 100) FM
CFRA 580 AM

Television - A Channel Cable 6

Do not evacuate unless you are instructed to do so.

Protective actions such as sheltering indoors and evacuation will help protect you.

If You Are Instructed To Take Shelter Go to the top

• Go into your home, place of business or other occupied building. Bring children and pets indoors immediately. If necessary, inform other people to take shelter. Give shelter to pedestrians.
• Prevent outside air from entering the building by closing all doors and windows, turning down furnaces, turning off air conditioning or any air exchange units.
• If you are in a vehicle, close the windows and vents and proceed home or to the nearest occupied building.
• Stay tuned to the radio and television stations for further instructions.
• If you are directed to do so, when coming in from outside, remove clothing and seal it in a plastic bag. Shower and put on fresh clothing and shoes.

If You Are Instructed To Evacuate The Area Go to the top

• Listen to radio and TV stations for official instructions from the Province. Instructions to evacuate will refer specifically to areas marked on the map below.
• To avoid overloading telephone circuits, do not phone 911 unless it is another type of emergency. Minimize telephone use.
• Quickly pack items needed for several days including; extra clothes, pillows, blankets and sleeping bags; important medicine, baby supplies; cash and credit cards.
• Secure the building as if you were going away for several days. Turn down your furnace/turn off air conditioning and other air intake units. Lock doors and windows.
• Please be aware that pets are not allowed inside the Reception or Evacuation Centres.
• Evacuate your sector exactly as instructed. Please share extra space in your vehicle with someone who needs a ride. If you do not have a ride, ask a neighbour or call your municipal office.
• For your safety, close the windows and shut the vents in your vehicle and listen to the radio for further instructions.
• Signs and Police will direct all traffic along Highway #17 East to the Reception Centre
• At the Reception Centre, you and your vehicle will be monitored for radioactive contamination. You will be registered with the Red Cross so friends and family will be able to find you. You may stay with friends or family outside the evacuated area, or if you do not have a place to stay, will will be directed to an Evacuee Centre in Pembroke.
• Return home only when you have been advised it is safe to do so. Stay tuned to radio and TV stations for further instructions.

Children At School

Please do not attempt to pick up children directly from school. For more information, contact your child's school as part of your family's emergency planning. Each school has a plan for sheltering and evacuating students. If your child is at school when an evacuation occurs, you will be reunited at the assigned Evacuee Centre:
